OSCEOLA, AR (KAIT) - An Osceola man is challenging the community to adopt an elderly person this summer.
"I like to help out, and I just like to let people know that if they need me, I'm here," Tyrone McNeal said.
McNeal knows the older people in town need a helping hand this summer.
"I know that the heat will kind of be a problem with the older people," McNeal said. "They can't do as much outdoors as we can when it gets this hot."
He recently decided to help several elderly residents living in town, one of them being Rachel Thompson.
McNeal does simple things for Thompson, like bringing her cold drinks while she relaxes outdoors.
He also helps with more challenging errands.
"I say 'Tyrone, I need to go to the store' and he's there," Thompson said. "I don't know what I would do if it wasn't for Tyrone taking over the yard."
McNeal mows the lawn for Thompson because he knows tasks like that can be tough during the hot summer months.
He also wants the community to get involved in this act of kindness.
He challenges the younger people to also adopt an elderly person this summer.
"They can check in on them twice a week," Thompson said. "That's all it takes."
Even Thompson realizes more people like her could use all the help they can get.
"Younger people, just look in on us," Thompson said. "You know, give us a helping hand if we need it."
McNeal said every act of kindness, whether big or small, will go a long way in their community.
He said anyone interested in participating can contact him at (870) 549-7849.
