JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A proposal to build 16 condos in the 700 block of Craighead Road got the go-ahead from the Jonesboro Metropolitan Area Planning Commission, but not before numerous stipulations were set.
The condos would be constructed on a two-acre piece of land off Craighead Road near Willow Apartments.
"I know a lot of people have issues with these apartments on Southwest Drive. The plan would be, if we get it, we start here and we could take down these." Jonathan Drum said. "Our thinking is we could improve basically the whole area."
There were talks of, in the future, tearing down Willow Apartments and redeveloping that area if the rezoning is approved.
At the meeting, multiple nearby homeowners expressed their concerns about having condos nearby.
Commissioners expressed concerns too.
"What we're really doing is we're creating a foothold for the expansion of what I see as The Willows," Brant Perkins said. "What you've got with The Willows and what you've got now and what you're trying to do on your contract on the west side, that's a huge project."
Perkins and Commissioner Jerry Reese voted against the rezoning.
In the end, six commissioners gave their approval but set forth 10 stipulations.
One of those is to have a 90-foot setback with 70 feet of trees as a buffer between the condos and the Amberwood Cove neighborhood.
The Jonesboro City Council must still give final approval of the development before it can move forward.
