Whooping Cough on the Rise in Arkansas

APRIL 18, 2005 - Posted at 4:01 p.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Arkansas Health Department says doctors are continuing to see instances of whooping cough in the state.

The disease, also called pertussis, has been on the rise nationally.  The department says Arkansas led the nation in the number of cases diagnosed in 2001 and 2002 when the state had a total of 1,379 cases.

In 2004, there were 90 reported cases in the state, and currently there are 50 cases, with many more being investigated, the agency said.

The state health department said that researchers believe the disease is infecting adolescents and adults whose childhood vaccinations are wearing off.  Those who were not vaccinated are also vulnerable.
