Poplar Bluff police warning about fraud

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KAIT) - The Poplar Bluff Police Department is warning residents about a fraud call after recent complaints.

The calls involve a suspect who claims to represent a local utility company.

The caller reportedly told residents they owe money to the utility company and their electrical service will be disconnected if they do not pay immediately.

The caller then told them to go to K-Mart, buy a gift card, and call another number to make the payment.

The police department is reminding people always to regard unsolicited calls asking for money as suspicious.

Anyone who receives a call like this should hang up immediately.
