WEINER, AR (KAIT) - Summer vacation is fun, but it can also be a time some children go without lunch.

The community of Weiner is working to stop that problem.

For the third year, the Weiner Outreach Center and the Weiner United Methodist Church are sponsoring a summer lunch program.

Kids can get a free lunch Monday through Friday from 11 to 12.

Volunteer Tisha Westerman was at the Weiner United Methodist Church Tuesday preparing chicken nuggets, tater tots, and fruit.

Westerman said they serve about 15 to 31 kids each day.

"I see it," Westerman said. "I do Girl Scouts. I work with the school, and there are a lot of poverty-type situations that children are hungry."

Westerman said this program has shown to be helpful to the community and hopes others consider doing something similar.

Private donations along with food from the Weiner Outreach Center help keep the kitchen stocked for the program.

They have also received a number of grants from businesses.

Anyone interested in donating or volunteering can contact the Weiner Outreach Center at 870-684-7619.
