CROSS COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

A Region 8 sheriff is warning residents about a suspicious call from someone saying they are with a county office.

Cross County Sheriff JR Smith posted an alert about those receiving calls supposedly from the Cross County Clerk's Office.

The caller tells the person on the other end of the line they owe money for a debt and ask for credit card information.

Smith states the call is a scam.

He says do not give the caller any credit card or financial information.

The sheriff advises to hang up the phone immediately and then contact the actual clerk's office at (870) 238-5735.

The Association of Arkansas Counties states in a news release Wednesday they are aware of these calls as well.

They say caller ID wrongfully shows the call is coming from a county clerk's office.

County officials and offices will never contact a resident or business by phone or e-mail to request such information, according to the association.

In addition to contacting county offices and law enforcement, residents can also report the call to the Arkansas Attorney General's Consumer Protection hotline at (800) 482-8982.
