MARKED TREE (KAIT) -

Marked Tree police arrested a woman for stabbing her stepdad with a large kitchen knife.

According to Police Chief Jerry Lung, Veronica Rivera, 20, of Marked Tree is charged with aggravated assault on a family member. Her boyfriend, Tommy Henton, 22, of Gilmore, is charged with domestic battery.

Lung told Region 8 News that Rivera and Henton went to Michael Sharpe’s home on Owens Street Saturday, June 18, and tried to get Rivera’s child. Lung said Sharpe was babysitting Rivera’s child when she and Henton arrived at his home intoxicated.

Rivera's mother told officers that the pair became angry when Sharpe refused to give up the child.

Sharpe told officers before he was sent to a Memphis hospital in a helicopter that Rivera stabbed him with a ten-inch butcher knife.

A neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, said she heard the argument from her apartment that night.

She said things like this happen often around where she lives.

She said after this event, she has decided to make a change.

"I'm really ready to move," the neighbor said. "Like my mother said, I called her and I'm just so ready to move. What's going to happen next? If this has happened now, what's the next big thing that's going to happen?"

Lung said Sharpe is in stable condition at Regional One Health in Memphis.

A judge gave Rivera a $100,000 cash bond. Henton received a $35,000 bond.
