INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - Three inmates are accused of trying to break out of the Independence County Detention Center on Monday.
According to a report from the sheriff's office, a deputy was called to the Independence County Detention Center because an inmate was picking at the brick in the cell.
A corporal said he walked by a cell and saw Jacob Smart, 18, and Dalton Booth, 20, on the top bunk digging around the cell's window.
The officer also said that he saw metal pieces in each inmates' hands.
The officer said he called for other guards over the radio and when they came to the cell they took Smart, Booth and Cody Millsap, 22, who was also in the cell.
The officer told the deputy that Booth and Smart were the only two digging at the window and that Millsap was folding something away from the window.
Once inside the cell, the deputy saw pieces of paint and cement on the floor and on the rack.
There were what appeared to be deep holes around the window, but the deputy did not get an accurate depth because he did not have anything to gauge the hole's depth.
The deputy took pictures of the cell.
Once the deputy finished taking pictures of the cell, he went to the cell where the inmates were being held.
He told them that a report was being written for attempted escape and they would not be going back to that cell.
He also told them that he was not going to ask them any questions and he did not want any statements from them.
Millsap was upset because he said he was not involved and the deputy said a report is being filed and that an investigator will follow up.
Smart said, "What are you going to do, put us in jail?" He also said that his friend did not get in any trouble when he escaped.
The deputy told the detention center's officer that the three should be watched because he felt they were trying to escape.
