New Pope is Chosen

VATICAN CITY - The new pope is Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany.

The announcement was made to a cheering crowd in St. Peter's Square.

Ratzinger is 78.  For more than two decades, he has been the cardinal in charge of Vatican doctrine.

He has chosen the name Pope Benedict XVI.
