JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Baseball players from across Northeast Arkansas were in Jonesboro over the weekend for a Cal Ripken Baseball Tournament.
Jonesboro hosts several weekend tournaments throughout the summer, bringing in hundreds of families from several different states.
Randy Bearce, the tournament director for Jonesboro, said the town hosts 12 to 15 tournaments each summer.
Bearce said they bring a lot of money to the city through sales tax and business.
"It keeps our hotels full and our restaurants full," Bearce said. "I hear it all throughout the week that someone went somewhere and had a long wait and had several baseball teams in front of them. It is a big money maker for our town and for our area."
He said baseball tournaments bring in well over $2 million each year in economic impact.
This weekend 11- and 12-year-old players competed in the Cal Ripken District Tournament.
Jonesboro will hold a state tournament next weekend for 7- and 8-year-old players.
