JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

A familiar crime is starting to heat up in Jonesboro.

On Sunday, the property manager for Marber Investments reported someone damaged an air conditioner unit to steal the copper wires inside.

The Tempstar central air unit had just recently been installed at the property in the 700-block of Meadowbrook, the manager told police.

It appeared the suspect removed the hardware to open the unit, then cut the copper lines leading into the house. The thief also stole four aluminum coils from inside the unit.

The investigating officer found the fan assembly, compressor, heat pump and other parts of the unit on the ground.

The manager said the air conditioner unit would cost $1,700 to replace.

He put the value of the stolen copper at $200 and the aluminum coils at $900.

He said the damage happened sometime after Thursday, June 23.

The case has been turned over to the Criminal Investigation Division.

In the last two weeks, Jonesboro police have investigated several reported AC thefts.

On Saturday, a man told police someone stole a 2.5-ton central air conditioning unit, valued at $2,500, from a home in the 2000-block of Vail.

Anyone with information on either of these thefts should call Crimestoppers at 935-STOP (7867).
