Police: Jonesboro woman lost money to scam

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Jonesboro police are investigating after a woman lost money to a scam this week.

Tuesday, the woman told police someone called her claiming to be with the IRS.

According to the report, the caller told the woman she owed more than $4,000.

The woman said the person also had specific information about her including her social security number, bank account information, address, previous addresses, and tax information from the past five years.

They instructed her to go to Walgreens, buy a $200 gift card and give the card number to the caller.

After giving them the number, the caller said the gift card did not work and told the woman to buy another one.

That is when the woman realized she was being scammed and contacted police.
