Fire department asking for more volunteers

Fire department asking for more volunteers

LEACHVILLE, AR (KAIT) - The Leachville Fireman Department is reaching out for volunteers who would like to become firemen.

The department is trying to add at least two volunteers due to a firefighter who recently resigned.

According to Chief Richie Pace, the department currently has 23 volunteer firefighters.

The fire department currently stays vacant during the daytime because all of the volunteers have full-time jobs.

Pace said he would like to have 5 to 6 firemen at the station during the day, but he said that's not always possible in a small town like Leachville.

During emergency situations, if the volunteers are unable to get the fire out, they have to rely on surrounding departments to assist.

Pace said that could greatly affect the outcome of the situation.

"We try to be there as quick as possible but sometimes it doesn't work out that way," Pace said. "Sometimes if you're driving from another town and you need help, and you have to call another town, our closest town is at least 10 minutes away."

Pace said they haven't had a deadly fire in years.

He said they haven't seen a huge problem with not having enough manpower on the scene, but it could become one.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter can call city hall.

Pace did say the department will provide training for anyone who is hired.
