Gun Locks Program to Continue in Arkansas

APRIL 20, 2005 - Posted at 4:06 p.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Over 195,000 free gun locks will be distributed in Arkansas as part of a national program sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.  The effort is intended to promote child safety.

Funded by a $35 million grant by the Justice Department this year, the Project Child-Safe Initiative has been around since 1999.  The program involves local law enforcement agencies that give out the free gun locks.

Lieutenant Governor Win Rockefeller said that the program allows Arkansas residents to protect their gun rights while ensuring that those who do not know how to use firearms will not be placed in danger.  Last year, 280,000 gun locks were distributed by 201 police departments in Arkansas.  About 23 million gun locks were distributed nationally.
