Man arrested for running over father-in-law with truck

CAVE CITY, AR (KAIT) - A Batesville man was arrested following an incident where another man was run over by a truck at a party.

On the night of July 3, Cave City police officers and deputies with the Independence County Sheriff's Department responded to a house on Pioneer Lane in Cave City.

According to the initial incident report, authorities were called to a report of someone being struck by a vehicle while at a birthday party.

Witnesses told deputies Shaun Matthew Davis, 31, of Batesville, became angry with his wife for talking with another man at the party.

He reportedly started yelling and went to his red, 2006 Ford F-150 to leave. The truck is equipped with a lift kit and large tires.

Davis was intoxicated, according to the report, and three people, including his wife, tried to keep him from leaving by opening the truck doors to talk to him.

Michael Demster, 49, of Cave City was also on the truck trying to talk with Davis, who family members say is his father-in-law.

However, the report stated Davis refused to stay and backed out of the driveway. Demster was dragged as he was still standing in the opened passenger side door.

When backed up to the road, Davis put the truck into Drive and Demster fell from the truck into the path of the rear tire.

According to a deputy's report, Davis sped forward and ran over Demster.

Demster was taken to a Batesville hospital.

A trauma nurse told a deputy Demster had "severe bruising on his side" and there may have been possible liver or stomach damage. His condition was not given at the time of the report nor was the deputy able to speak with him about what happened.

The following morning Davis turned himself over to deputies and was interviewed about the incident.

Davis told deputies he was jealous of another man at the party and went to his truck to leave. He also stated Demster was propelled to the rear of the truck as he was leaving.

However, he said he did not know he had run over the man with the truck.

Davis was arrested for felony first-degree battering and aggravated assault on a family member.

Online records show Davis has bonded out of the Independence County Jail.
