INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

An Independence County Detention Center employee was cited and fired for stealing medicine.

The incident happened on June 25 shortly after 5 a.m. at the detention center.

An incident report says that a sheriff’s deputy received a phone call from the assistant jail administrator saying that some medication was missing and that a report needed to be taken.

The assistant jail administrator told the deputy that she wanted him to look over the surveillance video before accusing an employee or inmate of the crime.

The deputy noticed that a woman placed medications on the cash box in the central control room.

According to Sheriff Steve Jeffrey, around 10:33 p. m., Samantha Thorne, 43, dug through the medications and placed a packet of meds in her drink or underneath her work shirt.

Thorne then left the area and began drinking from her water bottle.

The video showed that at around 3:20 a. m., another employee noticed the medication was missing.

The employee called the sergeant to notify the assistant jail administrator.

Thorne was cited for theft of property and was terminated by the facility.

The case has been turned over to the Arkansas State Police.
