TRUMANN, AR (KAIT) -

The Trumann police chief received an award for being a patriotic employer Tuesday night.

Dr. Gil Fowler is the area chair for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

Dr. Fowler presented Chief Chad Henson the award at the city council meeting.

The Patriot Award is from the Department of Defense.

Chief Henson was nominated because one of his officers is a soldier and the department works with him when he has to be off work for military duty.

“For me to get this award is just doing the right thing,” the chief said.

Chief Henson said he did not expect the award and did not even know such an award existed. He said the fact it came from Sgt. Eddie Weems makes the award even more special.

Chief Henson said he believes every employer he knows does the same with soldiers.

He also said it was a change of roles because he's used to handing out the awards not receiving them.
