SEARCY, AR (KAIT/KATV) -

The Searcy Fire Department is testing a new invention they hope will keep their firefighters safer when entering a burning building.

According to a KATV report, those buildings are usually about 1,400 degrees inside, which makes it nearly impossible for firefighters to enter.

And when they do, there's always a risk the flames would flash-over onto them once inside.

Andy Woody is with the Searcy Fire Department and said usually they'd have to wait a lot longer before going inside, but a new device called the Fire Exterminator lets them enter almost immediately.

"What it means for us is it's an increase in firefighter safety,” Woody said.  “The fire was near flash-over conditions when we deployed the unit, and it completely reduced that risk.”

The pin on the device is removed and it's thrown into the burning building.

The units cost about $900 each, but the department said after seeing what it does, every penny is worth it.
