MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

New details are emerging about the events that led to the death of a 12-year-old boy, after hiking in a north Phoenix mountain preserve on Friday.

Family members tell us that Cody Flom was hiking with his mother’s new boyfriend when he became ill between 3 and 5 p.m. Temperatures in the desert reached 110 degrees that day.

According to police, the boyfriend, whose name was not released, said he tried to carry Cody down the trail, but eventually left him in order to get help. The man said he had tried to use a cell phone, but it did not work.

Phoenix firefighters arrived at the trail, and Cody was airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where he died later Friday night. The Phoenix Police Department is investigating the incident.

Cody’s father, Brian Flom, tells us that he did not know his ex-wife’s boyfriend had taken Cody for a hike in the heat of the day. Flom said he would never have approved it.

Flom set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for funeral expenses. You can donate here: https://www.gofundme.com/2g68wgc
