PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) -

As athletes prepare for the Summer Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, young Region 8 athletes were getting their first taste of competitive sports with the Arkansas Special Olympics Young Athletes Field Day.

The event, hosted in conjunction with Ascent Health Services Center in Paragould was open to kids ages 2 through 7.

They’ve been preparing for the big day all summer and put their skills to the test in several different games that challenged their motor skills, balance and more.

Lisa Gough had two kids participate in the games and said she thinks events like this one will help them in the future.

“Oh I loved it!,” Gough said. “It was very exciting to see them have a good time and see them enjoy themselves and participate in things.”

The games are aimed at helping young athletes learn basic sports skills and prepare them for both traditional sports and those offered in the Special Olympics.
