Lieutenant Governor Candidate Aims to Cut Benefits for Illegal Aliens

APRIL 25, 2005 - Posted at 8:03 a.m. CDT

SPRINGDALE, AR - Republican state Senator Jim Holt says he has two political goals...running for lieutenant governor and a ballot measure to limit state services for illegal immigrants.

Holt also wants more strict identification requirements for voter registration.

In the recent legislative session, Holt failed to gain approval for measures that would require proof of legal status when applying for state services that aren't federally mandated and proof of citizenship when registering to vote.

Governor Huckabee, a fellow Republican, has been critical of Holt's views on illegal immigrants.

Holt will have some competition for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor.  Jim Lagrone of Bryant and Doug Matayo of Springdale also say they are running.  Lagrone is a Trumann native.  On the Democratic side, state Senator Tim Wooldridge of Paragould also revealed over the weekend that he will run.
