Group submits more signatures to get wet/dry issue on the ballot

INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - UPDATE August 9:  The group Keep Our Dollars in Independence County resubmitted signatures on Tuesday. The county clerk will now reauthorize the new signatures for the measure to be placed on the November ballot.

A group working to get the wet/dry issue on the ballot in Independence County got an extension to submit signatures.

The group, Keep Our Dollars in Independence County, submitted over 13,000 signatures to County Clerk Tracey Mitchell Wednesday.

Mitchell said 7,996 signatures have to be verified for the issue to be on the November ballot.

Mitchell said her office verified 7,252 signatures on the petition.

The group will need 744 more valid signatures to place the issue on the ballot.

Mitchell told Region 8 News there were several reasons some signatures were not verified.

She said those reasons include several duplicate signatures, several signatures from non-registered voters, and signatures from those outside the county.

Mitchell also said according to Arkansas Code Annotated 3-8-811 (6) if someone from outside the county signs on a petition sheet, the entire sheet is thrown out.

Mitchell said the group has 10 days to file more signatures for the petition.
