KENNETT, MO (KAIT) -

A yearlong transportation project is nearing completion for Kennett drivers.

On Monday, the Missouri Department of Transportation opened one of two lanes on the new roundabout on Highway 412.

MODOT official Eric Krapf said the upgrade will help make the traffic flow more efficient.

Krapf also said this will increase safety.

“After the accidents we’ve seen there, this will help address the accident problems along the bypass,” Krapf said.

A school teacher at South Elementary, which sits right by the new roundabout, said once people get the hang of it, it will be beneficial for not only her commute but bus drivers also.

“There have been a lot of accidents at this intersection, and we're really concerned because the buses pull in here every day and pull out,” Giny Smith said. “We think about our children's safety here. As a school teacher here at South, we're really excited about this because we think it's really going to cut down on the amount of accidents we've had in this area.”

The other lane going through the roundabout will open when the lane expansion part of the project is complete.
