BLYTHEVILLE, AR (KAIT) - Blytheville Middle School athletes can expect a surprise inside their gym this school year.
Athletic Director David Hixson said they got new flooring to help prevent injuries.
The district replaced the tile with foam mat flooring that helps secure a tighter grip on shoes.
Hixson said the tile was not as safe for children to play on as this new material will be.
Last year, a player slipped on the court and broke his ankle and could be out this coming season.
Tru Walker, a middle school athlete, expressed his appreciation for the new floor.
"I want to say thank you, and I'd like to appreciate them taking their time and their money to put work into the floor to prevent us from hurting ourselves," Walker said.
Hixson said the children's safety always comes first and they are excited to put the new court to use.
Several high school students helped in getting the job done by installing the court during the summer break.
