LITTLE ROCK, AR - A state agency is collecting information on three black communities built during the depression, including one in Region 8.
The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program is seeking details on the Townes community in Crittenden County, which was built with help from the Farm Security Administration, a federal relief program. Other communities which the AHPP is researching include Desha Farms in Desha and Drew counties, and Lakeview in Lee and Phillips counties.
Agency historians want to photograph any surviving properties from the three communities and document the architecture, to be used later to determine which ones may be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
