NEW ORLEANS, La. (8/5/16) – The Arkansas State men’s cross country, football, and volleyball teams were honored with the top Team GPA Award by the Sun Belt Conference for their respective sport, the league office announced Friday.
The A-State men’s cross country team boasted a 3.37 GPA to top the other conference schools, while the Red Wolves’ football squad registered a 2.82 mark to earn the honor. Arkansas State’s volleyball team posted a 3.56 GPA to claim the top spot in the conference.
The awards, released at the conclusion of the academic year, honor the teams with the top cumulative team grade point average in each of the sponsored sports within the Sun Belt. For award purposes, Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field are counted as a single sport.
The three top Team GPA Awards claimed by A-State were tied for the second most in the league with Troy as both institutions trailed the five won by Georgia State. Georgia Southern followed the Red Wolves and Trojans as the only other school with multiple awards with two.
Nearly seventy-percent of all Sun Belt programs recorded a team GPA over 3.0 during the academic year.
Across the league, Volleyball laid claim to the highest number of teams posting a 3.0 or greater GPA as all 12 league members hit that mark. Women’s Soccer, Women’s Tennis and Women’s Cross Country each had 11 league members with a 3.0 or greater GPA. In addition, four sports saw all of its teams post 3.0 or greater team GPAs during the academic year as Women’s Soccer, Women’s Golf, Women’s Tennis and Volleyball all posted GPAs 3.0 or greater.
