MARKED TREE, AR (KAIT) -

The Marked Tree food pantry recently got new owners.

Jim and Connie Huff, a retired couple, were asked to take over the pantry one day. Since then, they have made many improvements.

It is now known as Three Rivers Food Pantry and serves people in several surrounding areas.

When the Huffs took over the pantry, they said there was hardly any food so people in need could only get one day’s worth.

The couple said they only had three people pick up food the first week they ran the pantry.

Now, they see around 170 people each week who each get enough food for about four days.

They said strong communication with the community made that difference.

The pantry also provides toiletry items and cleaning supplies.

“If they are getting other subsidies for their income, there are certain restrictions on what they can use those subsidies for,” Connie said. “Cleaning products and toilet paper, soap, those are things that they can’t use it for. We got lucky and got the donation of it and we’re going to get it out so they can use it.”

The pantry is located at the old armory building in Marked Tree.

It is open to the public on Thursday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.
