Red Cross urging people to donate in August

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

The American Red Cross is urging donors to give in the last weeks of summer to help combat the critical summer blood shortage.

According to a news release from the organization, the summer months are some of the most challenging times to meet needs of patients.

While many regular donors delay giving due to vacations and other summer activities, the need for blood does not slow down during the summer.

Two summers ago, a jet-ski accident nearly took Kelly Griswold’s life while she was vacationing.

Griswold was airlifted to a hospital and underwent three surgeries in two days.

Griswold, who was a blood donor before the accident, was suddenly on the receiving end.

“Without the support of people that can give blood, the ones who have needed it would not be here today, myself included,” Griswold said.

Donors of all blood types are needed to give blood now to ensure it's available for those in need.

According to the news release, double red cells can be donated every 112 days and blood can be donated every 56 days.

Those who donate now through Aug. 31 will receive a $5 Amazon gift card as a token of appreciation.

Anyone wanting to donate can schedule and appointment by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App , visiting redcrossblood.com, or calling  1-800-RED-CROSS.

To help reduce wait times donors are also encouraged to complete the RapidPass online health history questionnaire.

The following is a list of donation opportunities available this month.
