Full-time officer assigned to MO school

CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KAIT) - Several new faces were seen on the campus of a Missouri school, including one with a badge.

For most, Thursday was the first day of classes for the Caruthersville School District. But for Officer Jazzma Thompson it was the first official day of duty on campus.

Thompson is an officer with the Caruthersville Police Department and is now a full-time officer for the school district. A police department Facebook post announced Thursday it was a joint effort between the city and the school district that brought a full-time officer to campus.

Superintendent J.J. Bullington says the officer is stationed in the high school but patrols the entire district.

Bullington states the district began a pilot program in January to have an officer on campus.

The results were successful leading to Officer Thompson's assignment.

Officer Thompson will go through training to become a school resource officer, Bullington says.
