New Surgery Is Opening Eyes In Region 8

April 28, 2005 – Posted at 3:00 p.m. CDT

JONESBORO, AR -- Lasik eye surgery has been correcting poor vision for years, but a new advance in the technique is allowing some patients to see even better.

“Both Lasik and the Custom View Lasik are phenomenal breakthrough in getting people out of glasses,” said Dr. Joseph Stainton.

And when the goal is getting perfect vision, a new technique is scoring points. It's called Wavefront-Guided Lasik and it's tailored to every patient.

“The reason this is better than conventional Lasik--which is excellent--is that it makes more or less a fingerprint of your eye,” said Dr. Stainton.

“The difference is that there is a machine that captures images of your eye that pick up the unique quality of your eyes that make them different,” said Dr. Russell Harral.

Doctors at the Vision Care Center in Jonesboro are the first in Region 8 to use this technology.

“Patients have individualized treatment,” said Dr. Harral, “They have a better chance of seeing 20/20 after the procedure and in some cases a chance of seeing better than 20/20.”

Although it's more expensive then regular Lasik surgery, recovery time is just the same.

“You get a higher percentage of people who see perfect vision or get super vision, you get a higher percentage that don't have some of the aggravating things about Lasik like glare and halos,” said Dr. Stainton.

Wavefront-Guided Lasik surgery was adapted from technology used to fix the distorted images from the Hubble space telescope.
