BROOKLAND, AR (KAIT) -

A shiny new building awaited Brookland Middle School students Monday morning.

Region 8 News got a peek inside the new 96,000-square-foot middle school.

Principal Randy Oxford said a millage was passed a couple of years ago to make this new building possible.

Construction started last year while students were placed in portable buildings.

“We were just having a bit of overcrowding in some places, and so it's really nice to have all the students in a safe and secure environment and under one roof,” Oxford said.

The building is equipped with a 500 seat gym and cafeteria.

“Now we have a place where we can have an assembly anytime we’d like to have it,” Oxford said.

Oxford said he’s received great feedback from teachers, students, and community members.

“The look of the building, having more space, and of course, it’s just so beautiful,” Oxford said.

Something the new building offers that Oxford is excited about is the security features.

“There's only one door that is unlocked and that's the very front door,” Oxford said. “There is a check-in there. All patrons have to check-in through the office and be buzzed in.”

The middle school is home to more than 760 students.

Oxford said they ended last year with a little over 500 students.
