New Scam in Region 8?

April 28, 2005-- Posted at 11:10 p.m. CDT

JONESBORO-- An elderly Region 8 woman is missing money, possibly the target of scam artists. The 80-year old woman, who lives near Rector, says two people drove up to her home this afternoon in a black car, possibly with Missouri plates.

The woman tells Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole a large black man got out of the car and came to the door claiming to be with the Social Security Administration. He's described as about six feet tall, weighing approximately 275-300 pounds, wearing a blue jacket and blue dress pants. The man allegedly told the woman he wanted to talk to her about her social security and help her pay her bills. Once she let the man inside, he apparently started walking from room to room. She told the sheriff the man noticed her purse in her bedroom. Soon after, he distracted her with something, then abruptly said he needed to leave. Once he was gone, she checked her purse, and discovered the money missing.

The Clay County Sheriff is asking for your help in finding the man and the other person in the car. The woman did not get a good look at that person, but it is believed it was another man. If you have any information that could help police, call the Clay County Sheriff's Department at 870-598-2270 or 870-598-3156.
