A Better Region 8 Guest Editorial: Foster parents needed!

ABR8.jpg ABR8.jpg

I have spent the past four years of my life in the foster care system.

I want to raise awareness about foster care in our area.

In Region 8, we have 193 foster homes and 605 foster kids. If you do the math you can see that there are children having to be placed in facilities and shelters waiting for a family to take them in.

It is important as a foster child to feel like you belong to a family. Many people assume that teenagers or older children are harder to foster, but that is just not true.

We want and need families to guide us through life. Because many of us have not had that, we may sometimes make bad choices.

The right foster home could help redirect those foster youth and could provide the love and stability needed to help them make better decisions.

There are many other ways to help teens like me. If you're not comfortable opening your home, we need mentors also.

If you are interested in fostering or mentoring foster children, you can contact Area 8 Community Engagement Specialist Omer Overbay at the Craighead County DHS 870-972-1732 Extension 1514.

Please consider helping children in your area. Children like me in foster care are in every school district and area in this region.

Thank you,

- Sheryl Campbell
