JACKSON COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

August 22 UPDATE: A body found in the Cache River last week has been identified.

According to Captain Ricky Morales with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, the body was identified Monday afternoon as 38-year-old Jesse Gates of Paragould.

Gate's family has been notified. The investigation is ongoing.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reported that a body has been located in the Cache River at the Jackson/Poinsett County line.

According to a news release, a farmer found a body near Pitts in rural Jackson County Friday morning. The man’s body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for identification and cause of death.

Sheriff David Lucas said when the body was pulled from the river, they were unable to identify the man.

"It appeared to be a white male, totally nude," Lucas said. "Just from appearances it looked like he'd probably been in the water for at least a week, possibly longer."

Lucas continued to say there was no apparent trauma to the body and they are working to find a cause of death as well.

Kenny Clark, a local farmer, found the body Friday morning while he was checking a pump station.

He said he looked in the river and saw a back.

"We had seen this and thought maybe it was an animal, which was normal," Clark said. "As we pulled it and it came closer to the surface, we could tell it was a  human."

When he made this realization, he said his worst fear had come true.

Clark explained that ever since a body from a suicide victim was found not long ago south of Grubbs, he has been concerned that every time he looks in the river he would find a body.

He said even though it finally happened, he will be fine.

"This is just something you hope never happens and even when I called the sheriff I was hoping it wasn't a body but we were fairly certain that it was," Clark said.

Lucas asked anyone with any information about a missing person please call the sheriff's department at (870)523-5842.
