America is the greatest country on Earth. But I think it's safe to say that things in our great country seem unsettled recently. Thoughts of elections, local and national scandals, and responding to natural disasters are taking people's focus.
Every once in a while, we need something to come along and help us remember that the American people make it what it is.
Through most of August, that reminder came in the form of Michael Phelps winning his 23rd gold medal, Simone Biles winning 4 golds and a bronze while stealing the hearts of America, and watching the NBA's finest win basketball gold while beating Serbia by 30 points.
The Rio Olympics was a chance to show the world that America believes in working hard and that we love our country.
Jonesboro Native Kyle Clemons represented Team USA in the 4x400 Meter Relay. Kyle's road to Rio began in Region 8. He has ties to both Jonesboro and Nettleton High Schools and ran track at the University of Kansas before going pro. His hero is his mom, Valarie. She was a track star at A-State and is currently an instructor in the athletic department. By running strong in the prelims, Kyle Clemons earned Olympics gold along with his team. A proud moment for America, a proud moment for Jonesboro, and a proud moment for all of Region 8.
We can't wait for him to bring that gold medal by KAIT on his next visit home to see his mom in Jonesboro.
Dedicated American athletes like Kyle Clemons are an example of hard work, and they showed the world that we are a proud country no matter what we face.
Now the Olympics are in the distant past. The athletes are returning home, NBC Region 8 returns to normal programming, and we have to focus on the issues at hand. But remembering that feeling of pride now that the Olympics are over makes this A Better Region 8.
