ASU-Newport offering mental health first aid class

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - Arkansas State University-Newport will host a mental health first aid class on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 28-29.

The eight-hour, interactive course is designed to teach essential skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Assess for risk of suicide or harm
  • Listen non-judgmentally
  • Give reassurance and information
  • Encourage appropriate professional help
  • Encourage self-help and other support strategies

Wednesday's session will be held from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday's session will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Those completing the course will receive eight hours of training, a mental health first aid manual and a certificate of completion.

The class fee is $50 and includes both sessions.
