Scouting Philander-Smith College
The Panthers finished the 2015 season with an 11-19 overall record, and were 6-6 out of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Philander-Smith was ranked third in the nation with 2.75 blocks per game. The Panthers lose their leading attacker, setter and defensive specialist from a season ago. Lyon is 20-1 all-time against Philander-Smith with the two squads last facing off on Oct. 21, 2015 – leading to a 3-1 match win for the Scots.
Notes to Keep an Eye On
- The Scots welcome back Katarina Frickleton who led the team with 312 kills and 95 blocks a year ago. Frickleton is ranked 10th in program history with 848 total kills. Michayla Shanks also returns after recording 124 kills, and 53 service aces – ranked second in the American Midwest Conference last year.
- Former Scot Emily Sprick finished second in program history with 3,128 career assists, and stepping in for Sprick is Brittney Beckham. Beckham will look to start the season strong after recording 66 assists last season.
- Lyon brings in seven new players this year in Shelby Powell, Kendra Kelley, Evelyn Embry, Jordan Dabdub, Taylor Williams, Valeria Idrogo and Haley Clem. Of those seven, five were named to either the All-State or All-Conference team in high school. Clem transfers to Lyon from Missouri Valley College.
- The Panthers have just 10 players, but of those 10 – five are transfers. Washington leads the group coming over from NAIA member Northwood University (Fla.), which is now Keiser University. Washington led Philander-Smith last season with 144 total blocks.
