False Woodpecker Sightings Generating Calls

MAY 2, 2005 - Posted at 7:56 a.m. CDT

JONESBORO, AR - Now that sightings of the ivory-billed woodpecker have been confirmed in an east Arkansas swamp, wildlife officials have been getting calls from across Arkansas from people who think they've seen the bird, too.  Since last week's first report of spottings of the ivory-billed woodpecker in the Cache River National Wildlife Refuge, the K8 Newsroom has also been flooded with dozens of calls and e-mails from viewers saying they have spotted the bird on their properties.

Experts say that's not likely, even though there is a woodpecker with similar coloring.  The pileated woodpecker has vivid colors like the ivory-billed.  But the pileated has a black back, while the ivory-billed has white on its back.

Also, experts say the ivory-billed woodpecker isn't likely to be spotted in developed areas, while the pileated woodpecker could be spotted in a back yard from time-to-time.
