POCAHONTAS, AR (KAIT) -

A man suspected of raping a child in Ohio was arrested in Randolph County.

According to Detective Shawn Nelson with the New Philadelphia Police Department in Ohio, the man was arrested Saturday night.

Detective Nelson said they don’t know the man’s real identity. He’s suspected of being an undocumented immigrant and fled to Arkansas to find work and start a new life under a new identity.

According to Nelson, the man has been using the alias of Miguel Garcia and police were only able to identify him because of a distinctive tattoo of a cross and rosary chain on his left hand.

Police believe Garcia raped a 12-year-old girl in June while he was staying at a home in New Philadelphia, Ohio.

He immediately went into hiding after the alleged incident and fled to Pocahontas, Arkansas.

Detective Nelson told Region 8 News weeks after the suspect disappeared, a family member led detectives to Randolph County.

Officers with the Pocahontas Police Department arrested the man Saturday night.

According to a report from the Pocahontas Police Department, officers waited for Garcia to arrive at home. Officers found him hiding in a bedroom.

Detective Nelson said the quick actions of the Pocahontas Police Department and Sergeant Dion Yancy led to the man’s arrest. Nelson believes had the man not been arrested Saturday night, the suspect would have fled again and likely not been located.
