OLATHE, Kan. - Freshman Zhane Mayo shot 14-over 86 to lead the Harding women's golf team in the first round of the Central Region Fall Preview, which began Tuesday at the Prairie Highlands Golf Club.
The tournament includes 18 teams in the NCAA Division II Central Region, which is comprised of the Great American Conference, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Mayo, a native of Hastings, England, is tied for 51st. Pia Nunbhakdi of Arkansas Tech leads the tournament after shooting 74 in the first round.
Central Oklahoma leads the team competition at 304, with Augustana second at 306. Harding is currently 18th at 369.
"Today's conditions certainly were challenging with the course set up and wind," Harding head coach Dustin Howell said. "We've got a young team with two sophomores and three freshmen playing this week, and it is great experience to play in high-level events like this."
Sophomore Delaney Bowles, who had two birdies in her round, was second among Harding golfers with a 19-over 91. Freshman Bryle Alcorn shot 94, and freshman Carlee Freeman shot 98. Sophomore Taytum Billington carded a 100.
"We learned a lot about what we need to work on from Round 1," Howell said.
Play continues with the second of two rounds Wednesday.
