Jonesboro Lawmaker Leads Charge to get More Leave Time for 39th

MAY 5, 2005 - Posted at 7:42 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - All 100 members of the Arkansas House have joined state and federal leaders in pressuring the army to give more leave to National Guard members returning from active duty.

The House members signed a letter circulated by Representative Dustin McDaniel of Jonesboro and faxed to the Secretary of the Army yesterday.  Governor Huckabee has already made a similar request and U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln has already succeeded in putting a request into the Senate's emergency Iraq spending bill.

The bill would call on the Army to review the Air Force's policy for leave after deployment, which the politicans say is fairer than the Army's policy.

Arkansas has about 3,000 members of the National Guard's 39th Infantry Brigade who recently returned from a year's deployment in Iraq.
