Seismologists Investigating Recent Series of Quakes in New Madrid Fault Zone

MAY 5, 2005 - Posted at 7:50 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The series of earthquakes that has rattled northeast Arkansas this year isn't surprising, but it is interesting for seismologists.

The scientists say temblors of 4.0 or greater don't usually happen so close together in space and time.  A 4.2 magnitude quake was detected near Caraway in February and a 4.1 magnitude rumble struck in the nearby Manila area on Sunday.

The area sits on the New Madrid Fault line, which was a significant site for major earthquakes in the 19th century.
