JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

The Williamsburg Apartments in Jonesboro reported numerous rent checks stolen from their drop box over the holiday weekend. Turns out, they aren't the only ones to fall victim to someone’s sticky fingers.

As of Thursday, five other apartment complexes in Jonesboro reported similar thefts.

At one apartment, more than $9,000 in rent checks and money orders was stolen.

The most recent reports come from The Meadows, Stadium Place Apartments, The Gladiolus Apartments, Grand Oak Place Apartments and Cedar Manor.

In each report, officers noted a similar M.O. The suspect used an unknown or sticky substance to get the rent checks and money orders out of the drop box.

"I didn't know why it was so sticky," Meadows Apartment Manager Jennifer Schmersal said.

Schmersal told police when she began contacting tenants who hadn't paid rent, they informed her they had already placed their checks or money orders in the drop box.

"At this time Mrs. Schmersal realized that there were 13 checks and five money orders missing," Officer David Stout said.

In total, $9,230 worth of checks and money orders was stolen.

At Stadium Place Apartments, $4,985 worth of checks and money orders was taken from the drop box. The apartment manager there said she caught a glimpse of the potential suspects, though.

Lindsey Goza told police that over the holiday weekend, she saw two possibly white males go to the drop box at the apartment complex. When she and her husband tried to make contact, the two went to their vehicle and left.

The car is described as a four-door silver or light-colored passenger car.

Each apartment complex involved stated they contacted the tenants affected and advised them to cancel their check or money order.
