JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Both feet and paws hit the pavement on Saturday during the 6th annual Cavenaugh Thumperthon 5K.

The race benefited the NEA Humane Society and the Jump Start Animal Shelter.

The event was created as a 60th birthday present to avid runner Donald Cavenaugh, who ran 25,000 miles in his life with several of those miles alongside his dog Thumper.

Organizer Fran Cavenaugh said it's important that participants recognize animals as part of the community.

"It is our responsibility as citizens to make our community better than what we found them and this is just one of the ways we can do that because our animals are a part of our community," Cavenaugh said.

A kids fun run was also held following the 5K. Prizes were awarded at the end for both dogs and their owners.

According to Cavenaugh, the event usually raises around $9,000.
