Supreme Court Sets May Hearing Date in School Case

MAY 5, 2005 - Posted at 4:14 p.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Arkansas Supreme Court has set a May 19 date to hear oral arguments on whether to step back into the landmark school-funding case and decide if legislators have reneged on a commitment to address problems with the public schools.

The court said in an order today that it will consider issues in a petition filed by the Rogers School District and joined by dozens of other districts to reopen the case.

Those issues include the court's jurisdiction in the case at this stage of the litigation.  Also, some school district lawyers say the Legislature retreated from prior actions to comply with a 2002 court mandate that found the school system unconstitutional.
