Excitement Builds Over Bird Sighting

Woodruff Co.--The hunt is just beginning for the Ivory Billed Woodpecker in Woodruff Co.  The bird which many thought to be extinct was sited last year by a birder, the name given to professional bird watchers.  Once spotted several teams of searchers set out to locate and film the bird.  Nearly a year later several teams have spotted the bird and there is even a grainy video of the bird in flight.

Officials with the Arkansas Game and Fish say they are excited about the find.  They feel the bird will put the national spotlight on the Natural State when it comes to conservation programs.

For birders and ornithologist, the finding is like their first Christmas.  “You never thought something you thought was lost could come back,” said Scott Simon.  Simon is the director for Nature Conservancy in Arkansas.
