LITTLE ROCK, AR (KAIT) -

When former Miss Arkansas Savvy Shields became Miss America on Sunday night, it left a vacancy. Now it is filled by a Region 8 native.

Savannah Skidmore is now Miss Arkansas 2016, according to an announcement Monday by the Miss Arkansas Scholarship Pageant.

The 21-year-old Calico Rock native is a senior at the University of Arkansas majoring in Broadcast Journalism.

Skidmore competed as Miss University of Arkansas during the Miss Arkansas 2016 Pageant and was first runner-up.

She will assume all the duties Shields had which includes making appearances across the state serving as "Arkansas’ spokesperson for the Children’s Miracle Network and the Arkansas Children’s Hospital and promoting her personal platform of “Speak Up Now: Suicide Prevention and Awareness."

In addition, she will promote the Miss Arkansas Scholarship Pageant.

Skidmore is the daughter of Jerry and Kim Skidmore as well as the granddaughter of Duane and Sue Price and Robert and Marion Skidmore, all of Calico Rock.
