JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - As Jonesboro continues to grow, area businesses are rejoicing, especially those along the Highway 49 corridor.
In the first 7 months of this year, building permits for the city of Jonesboro rose 46% compared to the same time last year, according to Talk Business and Politics.
The Hilltop area of Jonesboro has seen significant growth over the years and it doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon.
"We get new people every day," Donna Camp said. "It just keeps coming, which is wonderful."
Camp, a pharmacist at Camp's Medical Pharmacy, said they moved to the Hilltop area about two years ago from downtown. Camp said one of the main reasons for the move was so they could have a drive-thru window. However, the business of Highway 49 is a plus too.
"The drive-thru window has really helped, especially with this area, it's just so fast paced," Camp said. "This is just growing, it's booming out here."
On Tuesday, the Jonesboro Metropolitan Area Planning Commission will consider a proposal for a 3-unit strip mall near the intersection of Johnson Avenue and Airport Road. Already, one restaurant has plans to open up shop there.
Camp said it's not just the new commercial property that benefits businesses near Hilltop, though. A number of neighborhoods are being built in the area, bringing more people to their "community".
"It's always good to have a new neighborhood and new people and try to get to know them because they're part of our community," Camp said. "All these people are part of our community, they're gonna take part in everything out here, restaurants, businesses."
Right now, construction is underway on numerous projects on and near Hilltop.
A new gas station is being built beside Subway, a new hotel will be built soon near the hospital, and dirt work for the First National Bank Financial Park is underway.
