HATTIESBURG, Miss. (9/12/16) – Competing in its first tournament of the 2016-17 season, the Arkansas State men's golf team shot a combined 573 Monday to end the Sam Hall Intercollegiate' s first two rounds in seventh place among 15 teams.
The Red Wolves finished the opening round at the Hattiesburg Country Club in 12th place after posting a 291, but they cut nine strokes off that total in the second round to climb five places in the standings. A-State trails sixth-place Mississippi State by only one stroke and is within eight of Southern Miss, which stands second. Louisiana-Monroe shot a combined 557 to take the day-one lead.
Arkansas State was led by two players who are currently among the top-15 leaders, including sophomore Joel Wendin in a tie for fifth place and junior Andrew Huseman in a tie for 13th. Wendin and Huseman recorded a 140 and 142 respectively, although both carded a team-best 69 for the second 18 holes.
Competing as an individual, freshman Nikolaj Dahl is in 37th place with a 146, while junior Tanner Napier and sophomore Matthew Cole are tied for 38th place as each shot a 147. Sophomore Trent Jones is tied for 62nd place with a 148.
The Sam Hall Intercollegiate will conclude tomorrow with a third-and-final round.
