SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (9/12/16) – The Arkansas State women's golf team opened its 2016-17 season Monday at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial, completing the tournament's first two rounds at the Twin Oaks Country Club tied for eighth place among 15 teams with a combined 625.
The Red Wolves began play by shooting a 312 before coming back to post a 313 for the second 18 holes. A-State is currently tied with South Dakota and within six strokes of Little Rock and Western Illinois, which are tied for sixth place. UTEP shot a 599 to end the tourney's first day atop the standings.
Junior Sarah Childers recorded a combined 154 to lead Arkansas State, carding a 76 and 78 for the first and second rounds, respectively. Sophomore Beth Ann Compton and freshman Grayson Gladded both shot a combined 157 to complete the day tied for 35th place.
While sophomore Aracelly Jimenez Rios recorded a team-best 74 for the opening 18 holes, she followed with a second-round 85 to push her total to 159 and put her in a tie for 46th place. Junior Kirsten Garner is tied for 63rd place with a 164 and senior Maci Brooks tied for 69th with a 166. Garner is competing as an individual.
The MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial will conclude tomorrow with a third-and-final round.
